Swedish massage employs manual techniques such as effleurage, petrissage, vibration, tapotement (stroking, kneading, compression). It is a relaxing technique that helps to relieve tension, improve circulation, and enhance flexibility and coordination. Swedish massage is also used to prepare for sport and/or aid in recovery from physical activity; it reduces pain and can help with injury rehabilitation.
Amma Therapy restores the body’s energy (or Qi/Chi), especially when used to help with a specific medical condition. It is even safe to use on cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy to alleviate the nausea and fatigue effects of the treatment.
Trigger Point Therapy/Acupressure Point Therapy
Trigger point therapy is very helpful when treating conditions such as a stiff neck, which is often the result of prolonged incorrect positioning associated with typing, holding a phone, watching television, or sleeping with inadequate support.
Gua shua is an Asian method which involves scraping the muscles to release toxins and increase blood supply to the affected area. It is not painful but does tend to leave long striations on the area treated which disappear within a few days. The result is a wonderful feeling of relief, associated with the release of muscular tension.
Moxabustion involves the heating of an area of the body. This technique is often combined with acupuncture but it may also be employed by itself. It is frequently used during periods of cold weather in the treatment of arthritis or other cold-climate conditions. By providing a feeling of warmth deep within the body, moxabustion can help with the healing process.
Cupping is often used for acute cases of muscle spasm (typically due to overuse and stress). It helps to relieve the spasms and intense pain that they cause. Cupping also serves to increase blood flow to the affected area, facilitating the healing process. It can be especially useful for alleviation of chest congestion caused by upper respiratory conditions (i.e. cold, flu).
